About Moshé Feldenkrais
The Feldenkrais
Method was originated by Moshé Feldenkrais, D.Sc., a pioneer in movement
science and the innovator of therapeutic and educational approaches.
Feldenkrais was born in Russia in 1904 and emigrated to Palestine at the
age of 13. As a young man he was an excellent athlete and self-taught in
jujitsu. While attending night school preparing to study physics he was a
surveyor and tutored problem students. He had an early interest in
hypnosis and translated Emile Coué's book on autosuggestion into Hebrew.
Feldenkrais earned
his doctorate in physics at the Sorbonne in Paris, where he assisted Nobel
Prize Laureate Frederic Joliot-Curie at the Curie Institute. During his
university years he met Kano, the originator of judo. Feldenkrais studied
judo intensively and became a well-known judo teacher.
During World War II,
Feldenkrais went to England where he worked in antisubmarine research,
trained paratroopers in self-defense techniques, and authored books on
judo. On slippery submarine decks, he aggravated an old soccer injury to
his knees and began many years of extended work on himself. His
self-research led to discoveries about movement re-education and to the
development of his methods of Awareness Through Movement®
and Functional Integration®.
"The Feldenkrais
Method is the most sophisticated and effective method I have seen for the
prevention and reversal of deterioration of function."
Margaret Mead, Ph.D., Anthropologist
In Tel Aviv between
1969 – 1972, Feldenkrais trained his first, small group of practitioners.
From 1975 – 1978 he completed the training of a second group of
practitioners, this time in the U.S. Among his closest American students
was Mark Reese, who studied with Feldenkrais over a period of nearly 10
years, both in the U.S. and in Israel.
Feldenkrais authored
six books on his methods. In addition, his main body of work is preserved
in thousands of hours of audio and videotapes and transcripts. Feldenkrais‘
vast educational system was the result of 40 remarkably productive and
creative years during which he focused on the sensory-motor aspects that
underlie human action and experience. Feldenkrais died in 1984, leaving a
small group of highly trained practitioners who have continued to teach
his methods worldwide.
"The system
developed by Moshé Feldenkrais has as much potential for understanding the
mind/body relationship as Einstein's general theory of relativity had for
physics."
Bernard Lake, M.D.
The Feldenkrais Method®
The Feldenkrais
Method consists of two basic techniques, Awareness Through Movement and
Functional Integration. Together they comprise a system of neuromuscular
re-education that can dramatically improve individual functioning by
increasing self-awareness and facilitating new patterns of thinking,
moving, and feeling.
Awareness Through Movement
Awareness Through
Movement (ATM) is a verbally directed technique designed for group work or
as a form of “exercise” that can be done on one's own. ATM lessons
incorporate active movements and directed sensory attention or imagery. A
typical lesson lasts about forty-five minutes and combines a few dozen
movements, which are thematically organized around a functional action.
Examples of such actions could include developmental movements such as
rolling, crawling, and standing up; functions such as posture and
breathing; systematic explorations of the kinetic possibilities of the
joint and muscle groups; and experiments in movement-based imagery and
visualization that pertain to perception, cognition, and other aspects of
motor function. Throughout the lessons, students learn to integrate their
new skills into their self-image, and other parts of their lives.
"Awareness
Through Movement is a remarkable, quick, and effective way to alleviate
muscular tension and discomforts."
James Rice, MD
"The exercises
are ingenuous."
Yehudi Menuhin, World Famous Musician
"Awareness
Through Movement is a breakthrough in exercise technology."
William I. Koch, America3 Foundation, America's Cup 1992
Functional Integration
Functional
Integration is a manual (hands-on) technique for individuals who prefer or
require more individualized attention. Although it possesses significant
medical and therapeutic benefits, Functional Integration is neither
medical nor therapeutic in its philosophy and technique; it is
learning-based and primarily nonverbal. Benefits are achieved by enhancing
the efficiency, coordination, and grace of an individual’s posture and
movement. Lessons can be done with the student lying on a firm but
comfortable work table, standing, or sitting. The practitioner gently
touches or moves the student in a wide variety of ways to facilitate
awareness, learning, and vitality. Gradually the student is led to
organize new movement patterns through both conscious and subconscious
learning.
"Feldenkrais is
not just pushing muscles around, but changing things in the brain itself."
Karl Pribram, M.D., Neurophysiologist
"The unique
sensory motor learning techniques of the Feldenkrais Method are exciting,
enlightening, and one-hundred percent beneficial."
Gail Wetzler, P.T.
Training Program Structure and Content
The training program
includes both intensive experiential learning and the systematic study of
practical and theoretical materials.
Learning Awareness
Through Movement involves an in-depth experiential learning process that
is unlike any other educational experience. You will learn at least 300
different lessons (comprised of at least 7,000 different movements) over
the four-year program. The intent is to provide you with a basic
understanding of all aspects of human movement. These lessons include:
 | Movements ranging
in size from the very small to large actions of the entire body
|
 | Basic acts like
reaching, bending, sitting, standing, and walking |
 | Skillful, agile
ways to maneuver the body in any direction |
 | Fine movements of
the hands, feet, mouth and eyes |
 | Developmental
movements of infants |
 | The movement and
body usage skills needed to practice Functional Integration |
 | Movement
sequences that teach general learning principles |
 | A learning
process that teaches how we use and direct ourselves in all aspects of
life |
Through this
process, you will learn to do things with your body that you never dreamed
possible. You will discover amazing new levels of flexibility,
coordination, and agility. The extent of physical learning which is
accomplished is often a surprise to students who enter the training in
their 40's, 50's or 60's, and to students with histories of physical
limitations. Those who are highly athletic learn even higher levels of
skill. Students learn to refine their kinesthetic sense to a remarkable
degree, becoming able to sense in a highly accurate way the body's
muscular effort, subtle skeletal movements, balance, and orientation in
space. This is also a process of increasing self-awareness that leads to a
betterment of one's attention, learning skills, and entire life. This
intensive learning in oneself is the basis for learning Functional
Integration, the hands-on work with others.
"I've benefited
in so many ways—physically and mentally. I thought I would be simply
learning a skill, but I discovered a new way of thinking and exploring
life. The training program is one of the best things I've ever done for
myself!”"
Linda Rulli
Learning Functional
Integration can be one of the most challenging and rewarding endeavors of
a lifetime. You will be taught how to facilitate the education of others
through a refined process of nonverbal communication involving movement
and touch. In this program you will learn:
 | The important
contact points on the skeleton for the control of movement |
 | Functional
anatomy |
 | How to organize
many basic movement patterns that directly relate to daily activities
|
 | How to
communicate creatively and respectfully, verbally and non-verbally
|
 | How to work with
a great variety of individuals, from those with significant orthopedic
or neurological problems, to athletes, performers, and anyone wishing to
improve their movement and quality of life |
Specially selected
videotapes of Dr. Feldenkrais lecturing, teaching Awareness Through
Movement, and demonstrating Functional Integration will be shown
throughout the training. Adjunct videos on related subjects will also be
made available to students for viewing outside of class time.
As a student in the
training you will receive at least twelve Functional Integration lessons
as part of your learning experience. At least one lesson will be given by
senior trainers with 12–20 years of professional experience. Most of the
other lessons will be given by highly skilled instructors with more than
eight years of professional practice. You will have the opportunity to
observe lessons given to fellow students and to persons from outside of
class, sometimes with special problems or needs. There will be extensive
in-class demonstrations, supervised class practice between students,
lectures, discussion groups, and small group exercises.

Training Synopsis
Following is a
synopsis of each year of the training program showing what you can expect
to learn during the course of that year. Please note that details of the
Educational Plan are subject to change at the discretion of the
Educational Director, in order to best meet students' needs.
"Mark Reese and Donna
Ray have created a very inviting and nurturing training program that
allows me to be who I am, and to learn how to learn."
Bob McGrath
Year One
In the first year of
the program you will be immersed in learning Awareness Through Movement,
by means of lessons presented by the trainers, assistant trainers, and
examples of Dr. Feldenkrais’ teaching on videotape. You will undergo an
in-depth exploration of the ways you learned and moved as a growing child,
and you will learn to move in ways you have never done before. You will
greatly refine your ability to sense your bodily movement, become more
aware of your processes of thinking, feeling, and action, and come to
understand through self-observation, and the observation of others, how
learning occurs.
This intensive
preparation of yourself will serve as the basis of learning how to
communicate with others through the language of touch and movement. You
will learn about Functional Integration by: receiving at least three
individual lessons each year; observing lessons given to fellow students;
hearing lectures and seeing demonstrations on other students and on the
skeleton; and participating in various exercises done in pairs and small
groups. You will learn to develop an exploratory attitude, an enhanced
sensitivity of touch, and a greater understanding about function and basic
skeletal organization. By the end of the first year you will have the
basic elements needed to practice giving a simple Functional Integration
lesson, probably in the position of the student lying on his or her back.
You will then be able to practice the basic elements related to providing
support, organizing standing posture, and teaching functional learning
steps.
During the first
year of the training you will be encouraged to begin reading Dr.
Feldenkrais‘ books. You will also be asked to write about your experiences
with the method, and about the basic concepts you have learned. Through
general discussions, you will look at movement, learning, and awareness
through the perspectives of physics, biology and human science,
philosophy, personal development, and the arts.
"The Feldenkrais
training is the most significant learning experience I've ever
encountered."
Dave Scholz
Year Two
In the second year
of training you will continue to study Awareness Through Movement in great
depth, but Functional Integration will be given greater emphasis. You will
become more familiar with Functional Integration through demonstrations on
students, the skeleton, and on individuals with problems taken from the
general public. Concepts will include effort substitution, integration and
differentiation, the direction of breath and attention, and other learning
strategies. By the end of the second year you will have learned the
elements needed to practice giving basic Functional Integration lessons to
students in other positions, such as on the side and on the stomach.
A major theme of the
second year will be learning how to teach an Awareness Through Movement
lesson. We will analyze the structure of a lesson including its functional
logic and learning principles. You will be taught a large repertoire of
lessons during the course of the year. You will learn how to teach through
small group exercises that focus on different aspects of Awareness Through
Movement education, such as observational skills, understanding functional
relationships, and use of voice and language. Small group exercises will
provide you with practice time and feedback opportunities from the
trainers and assistant trainers.
"Feldenkrais has
made changes in the physical and emotional aspects of my life. It has
affected me in such a positive way that I feel comfortable being myself."
Joyce Levine
Year Three
Awareness Through
Movement will continue to be taught in great depth. We will examine more
closely how language is used in Awareness Through Movement teaching and
look at the relationship between language and movement.
In the third year
you will learn elements needed for giving Functional Integration in other
basic positions such as kneeling over the table, and sitting. By this time
you will have familiarity with a variety of basic functional situations:
sitting, lying on the side, lying on the back, lying on the stomach, and
kneeling. You will learn with greater clarity how these relate to basic
skeletal movement patterns such as bending forward, backward, sideways,
and turning and reaching. You will also learn more about basic locomotory
patterns such as crawling and walking, and other action patterns including
lifting, pushing, and expression. We will explore how all these patterns
of action include elements of orientation, exploration, manipulation,
expression, and discovery.
You will also learn
to see a person's habitual patterns of organization in movement, posture,
and behavior in functional terms, and how to go with a person's pattern of
self-organization or how to present new options. You will learn more about
how to shift and enhance a person's attention and perception, as well as
how to clarify and improve their self-image.
"The
Feldenkrais Southern California
Movement Institute Feldenkrais Training Program has been a gift of
inspiration where I have learned the impossible can become pleasurably
possible."
Celeste Mendoza Cannady
Year Four
The program will
still include Awareness Through Movement lessons, though somewhat less of
the teaching day will be devoted to it. We will examine how Awareness
Through Movement and Functional Integration are one system and how both
develop a new organization of movement and posture for all parts of one's
life.
During the fourth
year you will give lessons to other students in order to learn the timing
and structure needed to give supervised lessons to the general public.
More emphasis will be given to seeing lessons done on individuals from the
public—people with significant orthopedic or neurological problems,
athletes, dancers, musicians, and others. Practical supervision sessions
of Functional Integration will provide feedback which you can utilize
directly and immediately to improve the quality of your work.
Goals for learning
Functional Integration in the fourth year include:
 | Enhanced
sensitivity of touch |
 | Non-verbal
communication skills |
 | Understanding
function as it expresses the relation between the individual and his or
her environment |
 | Understanding the
dynamics of learning in Functional Integration |
 | Appreciating
aesthetic dimensions in Functional Integration and Awareness Through
Movement |
 | Knowing how to
organize a Functional Integration lesson, and learning to structure a
series of lessons |
 | Understanding
differentiation and quality of movement as distinct from range of motion
|
 | Utilizing subtle
movement and mental imagery in learning |
 | Learning handling
techniques for all principle joints and muscle groups |
 | Performing an
initial interview that gathers information and fosters the learning
process |
Teaching Awareness Through Movement
After successfully
completing the first two years of the training program, you will be
encouraged to teach Awareness Through Movement as student/teachers to
family and friends. After completing the third year, continuing students
are permitted by your Educational Director Mark Reese to teach Awareness
Through Movement to the general public. The authorization to teach
Awareness Through Movement is denied if the student takes a leave of
absence, drops out, or is dismissed from the training.
"Training in the
Feldenkrais Method has enabled me to understand in a fundamentally new way
a variety of common problems that people bring to me, such as chronic back
and neck pain. Along with this new understanding comes a new way of
working with people that satisfies the practitioner in a way only rarely
glimpsed in the practice of medicine."
David Taylor, M.D.
Attendance Requirements
The FELDENKRAIS
GUILD mandates that students in training programs miss no more than 10
days of training throughout the length the program, and no more than five
days in any one training year. If absences exceed these guidelines, the
student must make arrangements with the Educational Director to make up
the lost time at another training program, at additional expense to the
student.
Materials
As a student in the
San Diego Feldenkrais Training Program, you will be encouraged, but not
required, to purchase educational materials and professional products to
enhance your learning. These may include such items as books, tapes,
transcripts, rollers, and a Feldenkrais table.
